Starbucks launched its first national television advertising today to, believe it or not, draw more customers to its stores. The Seattle-based coffee company posted a 1 percent drop in customer traffic last year, according to the Seattle Times.
Still, the company’s sales rose 19 percent. But with 15,000 stores worldwide, and more opening every day (about 7 a day), same-store sales aren’t increasing as much as they have been. Could it be there are too many Starbucks locations?
The Golden Arches, aka McDonald’s, is also making inroads into the java business. The Times said McDonald’s pulled in some $900 million a year in coffee business alone last year, and is set to introduce lattes, cappuccinos and other coffee drinks next year.
Nothing personal against Starbucks – I do get a cup at one if their locations every now and then – but I more often go to locally-owned stores, some of whom sell locally-roasted coffee. Don’t the corporate giants get enough of our money already? Spread the wealth and visit your local businesses more often. You’ll find the quality, service and price comparable – if not better – than the big chains.
