Local economic news today

Gov. Barbour is in Tupelo today to celebrate the grand opening of the N.E.W. customer service center that supports DirecTV. The center, which is at the Mississippi Complex at the Tupelo Furniture Market, could have as many as 500 employees in the next year or so. At least, that’s what company officials said back in September. Daily Journal business reporter Carlie Kollath will be covering the event this morning.

And later this afternoon in West Point, Ultralife, a battery company, is expected to announce that it is bringing about 30 jobs to the area. The company is working in conjunction with Mississippi State University.

It may be rainy and yucky outside, but news like this is always welcome.

Phew. What a news day! Here’s the short version - you can read more about it in the paper tomorrow:

    • NEW (you should say it N-E-W and not as one word) had its grand opening today and about every official in town showed up. The call center looks great and currently employs about 350 people. Also of interest was the attendance of two members of the Maloney family, as in Cowboy Maloney’s. Apparently, Cowboy Maloney’s was one of NEW’s first customers about 20 years ago.

    • Ultralife did make its announcement that it is opening a manufacturing facility in a former Bryan Foods building in West Point. The news was announced Jan. 9, but the company has been flying under the radar all month. I’m still not sure why they just now decided to have a press conference. The good news is West Point Mayor Scott Ross said it’s his understand that the 30 jobs are just the start. Let’s hope so. Time will tell.

    • And of course, the press conference for National Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day. We couldn’t make it to the 6 p.m. press conference, but you can read a condensed version of the press release at the link above.

OK. That’s all I’ve got for today. Tomorrow’s going to start bright and early with First Friday at 7 a.m. at the food court at the Mall at Barnes Crossing. Scott Williams, director of marketing and communications of Elvis Presley Enterprises, is the guest speaker.

Oops. I forgot about the state’s unemployment stats. Check tomorrow’s paper to see how NeMiss did.
