Cheapest gas: New Albany

Good news is gas prices are down a little bit from last week. Bad news is the savings rates in Business & Money this week are quite a bit lower, as well.

The cheapest gas is still in New Albany ($3.04 per gallon of regular). Sherman has it at $3.09.

Then we have a pretty wide spread. It’s $3.12 in Starkville and $3.14 for members at Sam’s Club. Amory has it priced at $3.15, and it’s a penny more in Iuka ($3.16). Kroger in Tupelo has regular for $3.17 without any discounts.

Oxford wins the award this week for the most expensive gas: $3.19 for regular.

See Sunday’s Business & Money section for more gas prices, bank rates and air fare prices.

Regular Gasoline in Tupelo,MS is $3.23 and Higher. How can you say that in Oxford $3.19 is the Highest in the Area?

The cheapest gas in Lee County is almost always at Countyline #1, on HWY 348 in Blue Springs. How do I know that? Because I own it, as well as live in Tupelo, so I monitor the prices pretty good. Thanks, Ruth Erar

I’ll be the first to admit our gas chart isn’t comprehensive. It’s meant to be representative of the area.

We approach the prices by finding the gas stations that historically have the cheapest gas in the respective towns. The prices we list are more of a starting point. Rufus, yes, you can get gas in Tupelo for $3.23 and up, but you can also get it for $3.14 at Sam’s. In Oxford, you can get it for $3.19, but to our knowledge, when we surveyed the gas prices, you couldn’t get it cheaper than that in Oxford.

And, Ruth, if you’d like, you are more than welcome to send us your gas prices Friday morning for publication on Biz Buzz. My e-mail address is carlie.kollath@djournal.com. You also can post the prices on our “Cheapest gas” post each week. We run it on Biz Buzz every Friday and it’s normally published no later than 4 p.m. However, the prices listed have to be the ones on the pump as of noon Friday.

And, I’ll extend that option to anyone else. Any time you know of a gas station with cheaper prices than we post, please let us know. Especially if you are by Wal-Mart in Pontotoc and can get the prices. We know the store has good prices (I filled up for $3.04 yesterday), but the management has been uncooperative in our gas price survey.
