Little Caesars to open in NeMiss

Mike Naylor, who currently has nine Little Caesars franchises in the Jackson area, is opening a Little Caesars location in Tupelo. It’s slated to open in mid-May at 2434 West Main, which is in the shopping center that is home to Dippin’ Dots.

After the Tupelo location opens, Naylor is moving on to conquer Starkville, Oxford and Columbus. Read more in tomorrow’s Daily Journal.

Four-day work week in Tupelo

The high gas prices are having ripple effects in Northeast Mississippi. As of this week, we know of one Tupelo-based business that is moving to a four-day work week. It’s optional for the workers, and we hear that three to four of the employees are participating. Regular hours are 8 to 5, but the four-day workers will be there from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are alternating who gets off on Mondays and Fridays.

The reason: Some of the employees are driving from other counties and it’s one less trip they have to make to Tupelo. However, someone always will be in the office.

Anybody know of any other offices that are switching up hours due to rising gas prices?

Live in Oxford and own a gun?

Talk about a generalization. From a BBC story (full text) about gun control:

Wait till you get to London Texas, or Glasgow Montana, or Oxford Mississippi or Virgin Utah, for that matter, where every household is required by local ordinance to possess a gun.

Folks will have guns in all of these places and if you break into their homes they will probably kill you.

They will occasionally kill each other in anger or by mistake, but you never feel as unsafe as you can feel in south London.

Head for the gas pumps!

Get it while it’s hot – gas prices are going down. Sorta.

Passed by the Kroger at Crosstown in Tupelo this morning, and regular unleaded had dropped from $3.52 to $3.47 a gallon.

Not a lot in the big scheme of things, but when’s the last time gas prices actually fell?

It’s likely not going to last for long, however. Experts are still talking about $4 gas, and possibly $5 or $6 gas by the end of the year.

Enjoy it while you can, and fill ‘er up!

Oh, by the way, here are the latest oil company earnings reports:

  • BP posted first-quarter net profit of $7.6 billion, a 63 percent increase over last year’s first-quarter results. Revenue increased 44 percent to $89.2 billion.
  • Royal Dutch Shell’s 1Q earnings rose 25 percent to $9.08 billion, on a 55 percent increase in revenue to $114 billion.
  • Last week, ConocoPhillips reported earnings of $4.14 billion

Stimulus check spending plans

Those of you who have gotten your “tax rebate” checks – and those still waiting – what are your plans for your financial windfall?

The National Retail Federation, with its rosy glasses, thinks consumers will spend $43 billion, or about 40 percent of their checks, with retailers to give them a boost much like Christmas.

I agree with others who think that most people will be spending the bulk of their checks on just buying the basics like food and gas. A bulk of the money likely will be used to pay down on some debt, too.

Wal-Mart definitely wants to cash in – the world’s ginormous retailer said it would cash stimulus checks at its stores. How nice of them! But it’s not alone. Other retail promos related to the stimulus checks:

  • Kroger will add 10 percent to the value of the rebate checks when customers use them in $300 increments to buy Kroger gift cards
  • Sears and Kmart will get an additional gift card in the amount of the check plus 10 percent, as long as the customers spend their ENTIRE check at one of its stores between May 14-19.
  • Home Depot will offer discounts through July on Energy Star appliances and CFL bulb

Let the battle for our dollars begin!

We need Krystal help

We finally have enough info to run a Krystal story in the paper, but we need your help. I’ve been told that this will be the third time Krystal has opened a restaurant in Tupelo.

It started with a restaurant on Coley that later closed. Then, it opened on South Gloster in the current Guthrie’s location.

Is this true? Anybody know the dates of when things opened and closed?

Guthrie’s to open in Amory

According to Guthrie’s corporate Web site, a new location is “coming soon” to Amory. Don’t have any other details yet.

For those not familiar with the company, it specializes in golden fried chicken fingers. The first Guthrie’s franchise in the state opened in Tupelo last year in the former Dawg House location on South Gloster.
