Storm damage reported in Tupelo

Intrepid Biz Buzz team member Dennis Seid is reporting the following storm damage in Tupelo:

• The new sign (pictured before the storm) at the Mall at Barnes Crossing is bent.
• A lot of electricity is out around the Barnes Crossing area. He’s spotted one car in a tree. Cops are directing traffic. Highway 45 is backed way up.
• One of the buildings at the Mississippi Complex of the Tupelo Furniture Market sustained some damage. Part of the roof of one of the buildings (he thinks Building D) blew off.
• No damage reported at the airport.

    From Dennis:

An early morning tornado today that hit parts of Tupelo damaged several homes and businesses, including the Tupelo Furniture Market’s Mississippi Complex.

Businesses around the Mall at Barnes Crossing also were damaged.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is expected to declare a state of emergency for Lee County around noon today.

Mall general manager Jeff Snyder said a tornado struck close to Sonic and the Wesson & Mothershed Eye Center. Tupelo Police Department personnel had blocked traffic around the area. The mall was open, but access was limited.

A few awnings over some of the main entrances at the mall sustained minor damage, and several trees were down.

Just curious… Did anyone else feel an earthquake or a tremor at about 1pm today in Tupelo? I felt it, and I’ve heard a few others say they felt it as well.

Wait nevermind, it’s confirmed. It was a 3.1 earthquake, epicentered near Sherman. It struck at 12:52. I knew I felt something.

Did the tremors or the earthquake itself do any damage? I live close to Fulton, and I didn’t feel anything. I guess we were too far away from the epicenter to even feel tremors!!
