Southern Ice Cafe (picture of storefront), a restaurant and gelato shop in the shopping center anchored by Bed, Bath & Beyond, is now open.
The restaurant soft opened Wednesday, only to be shut down by the tornado yesterday. The restaurant made it through without any major damage and is back open for business today. A grand opening date hasn’t been set yet.
The owners and employees are still working out the kinks, so be patient with them. Co-owner Bob Schwartz said so far the gelato and the soups have been the big sellers.
Hours are Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Gelato menu (it changes every day - click on the image for a bigger version):

I tried it today. This place is great!
I stopped in Saturday night and the menu is great. They have a variety of salads, hot subs, toasted subs, and wraps–plus the gelato and coffee/espresso drinks.
Co-owner Bob Schwartz says the first full week of Southern Ice Cafe was “extraordinary. The response to both the gelato and the sandwiches/soups/salads was even better than we could have expected.”
And we got an e-mail update today alerting us that the restaurant has a few new gelatos on the menu.
Also from the e-mail: “The popularity of our fruit sorbettos is also growing, as we add new flavors made from the fresh fruits of the season. Cantaloupe Sorbetto is the latest to be added. For those who aren’t familiar with sorbetto, it is not an icy dessert like sorbet (despite the similar name). Sorbetto is creamy like gelato, but is made without milk or cream. It is dairy-free and fat-free.”
And, I’ve added a sample gelato menu to the post above. The menu changes every day so if you are itching for a specific flavor, I’d recommend you call before you go so you don’t get your hopes dashed.
i had the mississippi mud last nite…..stuff was goodt!!!
I finally ate at Southern Ice Cafe this weekend. I had a chicken and hummus sandwich and a combo cup of white peach sorbetto and pistachio gelato. I enjoyed everything. My only problem was narrowing down which icy treat to get.
The restaurant also has a daily e-mail update of its gelato flavors and soups. Join the list by e-mailing southernicecafe@att.net.
Well I finally made it to Southern Ice this weekend. I have to say the texture of their gelato is very close if not exact to what I had in Italy but I was sort of disappointed in the taste. The sample I tried seemed to have a bunch of taste but not the right texture but the cup of it I had was the right texture without much taste.
Got my daily e-mail update from Southern Ice Cafe and was surprised to see a hummus-based platter on the menu. I don’t know of any other restaurant in town that has hummus on the menu.
