Listen to music at work?

Jeff Snyder, general manager of the Mall at Barnes Crossing, runs four Internet radio stations. But, of course you knew that if you’ve already read today’s Neighbors section. It’s not online yet, but we’ll post a link when it is.

Until then, you can listen to Snyder’s radio station’s here at TupeloRadio.com. And that leads me to my next question – if you work in an office or cubeworld, are you allowed to listen to music while you work? Do you use headphones? Tell Sheena at Scene Now what music you actually listen to.

I listen to online radio stations when I’m writing. I used to have the regular iPod headphones but I ran over them with my chair and had to get a new pair. Until Apple delivered the in-ear headphones, I was using these huge earmuff-style headphones. They work great when I want to block out my coworkers, but I always questioned the professionalism of massive headphones. Now, I’m back to my little earbuds. Anyway, what do you do in your office?

I’ll admit, there are some days that I could care less how unprofessional huge headphones are — besides, any visitors are on OUR land! :) Of course, though, I have to go with the little earbuds – even though they really don’t block out any noise.

Let’s double up — at Scene Now I’ll discuss what kind of music folks listen to at work… Yay, teamwork! :)

How bout this. I’ve got my on office, but don’t listen to music. Instead I try to find a good ballgame on. Listening to the Yanks v Twins right now. If that’s not on I settle for sports radio. I love musice, but I looooooooove sports.

I am pretty much forced to listen to random, unsolicited comments blurted out by co-workers down the hall. Plus, my phone rings too much to have music playing on my computer.

I can listen to music at work… i usually go to http://www.christianrock.net and listen to it.. they have different stations on there like hip hop, rock, hard rock and powerphrase. The pop up window that plays the songs also show the lyrics and whats coming up next… they also have all request hours.. where people can call in… it keeps me motivated.. makes the day go by.. and week to make it through the weekend…

I used to listen to XM, until corporate said that they didn’t want us using all that bandwith to listen to internet radio, or watching You Tube Videos, it slowed the system down. And I guess since our system is live in 19 countries, everyone doing it probably would slow things down.

pandora.com will let you basically create your own radio station…just type in a band you like and will play similiar tunes and you can tweak it if you wish…..pretty cool deal.

I pretty much stick to my ipod…used to love listening to air1 radio through itunes but I don’t have any headphones right now that will reach near the floor to the headphone jack on my computer tower! Unless I want to bend over and look at my computer screen with one eye and do all my work with one hand!

    yoga might help, cpmyd

Ah, good old air1. I used to listen to that station. I like that you can go to the Web site and it will tell you who is playing.

I had the same problem with my headphones tethering me to my tower at a very uncomfortable angle so I bought an extension cord at Wal-Mart or Best Buy (don’t remember) for less than $10. It says plugged in all the time so all I have to do is plug my headphones into the jack. Now I can move all over the place.

Greg, I’m feeling you with the bandwidth issues. My old job put the kaboshes on streaming music because it was bogging down our Internet connection. So, we started bringing CDs, uploading them to our computers and then using iTunes to share our music within the network. We do that a little here at the Journal. I can hop on Sheena’s library, and Todd Sherman, one of our photographers, has a good library as well.

mammoth – Pandora sounds interesting. But I’m on the site now, it significantly is slowing down my browser speed. I mean everything is going slow. I’m still waiting for it to load and I’m typing this message and the computer is two or three letters behind what I type. Hmmmm. Can I get it to run out of iTunes?

  19. 19 bigwoolymammoth July 25, 2008 at 9:35 am

i never really noticed much difference but then again ive constantly got music streaming, downloading, or itunes running…..sometimes all at the same time. so maybe im used to a lil slow, but im not 3 letters behind.

  20. 20 hankcom July 25, 2008 at 9:44 am

bizbuzz-you might need to check your system.I am like mammoth. I’ve never noticed a slow down with Pandora. Pandora is SUPER. I think you can create up to 100 channels.

    just bunk journal equipment…….

  22. 22 tupelobizbuzz July 25, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Don’t hate. We got upgrades this year.

I finally got Pandora to work. I like that it’s just music and no talking. Is there a way to go back and listen to music that has already played? I still haven’t read the directions yet.

  23. 23 bigwoolymammoth July 25, 2008 at 4:18 pm

yeah im pretty sure you can…..i keeps a list of tracks played for you down at the bottom i beleive.

The days of online radio freedom are over at the Journal. A snippet from an internal e-mail sent out yesterday:

RedMagnet has been monitoring our Internet usage the past couple weeks and has noticed that we (the whole company) use a lot of Internet Radio and other live, streaming Web sites. The problem with that is it uses a lot of bandwidth, in turn, making it more difficult for our weekly properties to log in to Brainworks and transfer files and making our whole network slower.

So, as a rule, don’t use Internet Radio (iTunes podcasts and radio, Pandora, Project Playlist, etc.) I know on occasion, we will use YouTube and other sites for work purposes, just try to keep this to a bare minimum.
