Eutaw wins Oxford airport contract

From the AP:

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Aberdeen-based Eutaw Construction Company has won a $4.8 million contract to build the East Parallel Taxiway at the University-Oxford Airport in Oxford.

The University of Mississippi awarded the project intended to aid local and regional economic development by improving the airport facility.

Eutaw will clear and grub 42 acres, excavate and develop the site, and do silt fencing, erosion control, pavement removal, concrete paving and markings.

NeMiss stars on state Web site

The Mississippi Development Authority is promoting the Toyota site near Blue Springs on the front of its Web site. It’s not earth-shattering news, but I thought it was good that with all of the developments in the state, the main picture is Toyota.

Here’s the screenshot:

Drive-by: Toyota site 6/6

The following pictures show how Toyota site looks from Hwy 78 as of Friday. Click here for an aerial and here for older site pictures.

And let’s take a minute to ponder the water tower. It reads: THE PUL ALLIANCE / BLUE SPRINGS, MS

Yes, The PUL Alliance deserves major kudos for getting the project to our neck of the woods. The representatives from Pontotoc, Union and Lee counties worked together for the common good. Still, when Toyota left it up to The PUL Alliance to decide what went on the water tower, they should have put Toyota’s name. The Toyota symbol would been nice, but Toyota Motor Sales owns the rights to it, so a simple “Toyota” would have worked. Credit should be given where credit is due, but I’m curious how many people who drive past the water tower know what The PUL Alliance is. Now, Toyota? I doubt there would be any questions. Hopefully, Toyota or The PUL Alliance will put up other signage on both directions of the highway to alert everyone what the manufacturing facility is.

The following aerial photo of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi is courtesy of Jack Savely of Mossy Oak Properties Pontotoc. Highway 78 runs along the bottom of the photo. The view from the sky gives a good look at the building in the back, which is hard to see from the road.

Mississippi recruits NYC tourists

Grits sculpture contest?! Why on earth don’t we do that locally? Wow, that sounds like fun. From the Mississippi Picnic in the Park organizers:

Great arts, hours of blues music, delicious fried catfish and hushpuppies, as well as a heap of Southern hospitality are all on tap for the 29th Annual Mississippi Picnic held in New York City’s Central Park East Meadow (97th Street and 5th Avenue) from Noon – 6 p.m., Saturday, June 7, 2008.

This year’s theme, Art in the Park, will pay tribute to the state’s talented artists. Some of the Mississippi artists participating in this year’s event will be Lea Barton, Nancy Branton, Linda Dahlke, Teena Grantham, Karen Jamison, Ellen Langford and Lisa Paris. Their artwork will be displayed and for sale in the PORTICO Jackson Arts Pavilion.

Simmons Farm Raised Catfish in Yazoo City, Mississippi, will provide 500 pounds of catfish and 120 pounds of hushpuppies for the picnic. The catfish will be prepared by the Mississippi Catfish Cooking Team from Madison, MS, and plans are to serve at least 1,000 people. Simmons has provided the fish for the past five years.

Adding to the southern flavor of the picnic will be McAlister’s Deli, who will be on hand to serve their famous sweet tea.

Drive-by: Tupelo CVB 5/29

Construction is trucking along for the remodel and expansion of the Tupelo CVB at the corner of East Main and Elizabeth streets. And don’t be fooled by the two-story facade. The building will remain one story. Construction is supposed to wrap up in October.

The first picture is the view from the south side of Elizabeth facing the BancorpSouth Arena. The second picture is the view of the back of the CVB. The third is the view from the Hilton Garden Inn. Click on any picture for a bigger version.

Drive-by: Hilton 5/29

Construction has finally started on the addition at the Hilton Garden Inn in Tupelo’s Fairpark District. The additional tower will house 48 rooms (40 rooms will have two queen beds and eight will be two-room suites). The expansion is west of the 110-room hotel, between the Hilton Garden Inn and the Fairpark Grill. Last we heard, the hotel management was shooting to open up the the new rooms late this year or early next year.

Tourism blogger gives MS props

Our state got some kudos from Travel 2.0, a blog about the convergence of interactive technology and travel (read: tourism).

An excerpt (full post):

I’ve been to many marketing conferences and workshops but nothing comes remotely close to the education, inspiration and genuine camaraderie I experienced at “smackdown”. The following are my opinions on some highlights (in no particular order) from “smackdown”:

• Cool Use of Guerilla Tactics: South Dakota’s “Street Team” for a promotion inviting Minnesotans to visit the state (six Cowboy re-enactors were brought in to ride the trains and roam the streets of the Twin Cities for a week)

• Best Brand Story: Mississippi’s embrace of the idea that the state is the “Birthplace of America’s Music” (more info); this idea is manifested and embraced across all mediums…including a 24/7 live streaming Mississippi radio station.

Drive-by: Toyota site 5/23

The Toyota site as of today (previous photos). The pictures were taken right before/after a brief rainstorm, thus the clouds. All the pictures were taken from the Blue Springs exit ramp of Highway 78 East.

The first picture is an overall view of the site. The next three were taken south to north (left to right if you are looking at the plant from 78). The fourth picture with the walls getting put up shows the biggest difference from last week. Click on any picture for a bigger version.
