$4 gas in NeMiss

It’s coming. The question is when. As of Friday, the state average was $3.77 for regular. The pumps have passed $4/gallon in many other parts of the country.

So, what do you think? When will we start paying $4/gallon in NeMiss? And if you are feeling adventurous, care to take a guess at which town will hit it first?

If you asked me last week, I would have said we’ll have $4 gas here within two weeks. But, crude is down today, so I’m going to say we are going to hit $4/gallon of regular around June 23. Who is going to hit the unmentionable price tag first? IMO, it will be West Point.

And, if you’ll think back to a story we wrote in January citing a senior market analyst at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration - you’ll recall that he only expected gasoline prices to hit $4 this summer in parts of California.

Cheapest gas: New Albany

Ouch ouch ouch. That’s what my checking account is saying about this week’s gas prices.

New Albany has the cheapest gas ($3.43 for regular). Members at Sam’s Club can get it for $3.46/gallon. It’s $3.47 in Sherman.

Gas is $3.51 in Starkville, $3.52 in Iuka and $3.52 at Kroger in Tupelo (without discounts).

Most expensive gas this week: Tie - Amory and Oxford ($3.54)

Amory in talks with ethanol plant

From Chris Wilson’s blog, a reporter out our sister paper, The Monroe County Journal:

Southern Ethanol Co.’s officials came to Amory to meet with Amory’s mayor and board of aldermen Tuesday night, April 15. This company had secured property in the city’s waterway industrial park a couple years ago but nothing has happened in the time frame they had earlier promised. The company was going to produce biodiesel fuel, ethanol, by distilling corn.

Cheapest gas: New Albany

I say the cheapest gas, but you aren’t really going to find gas on the cheap this week.

New Albany has the best price for regular ($3.25 per gallon). Then it’s Amory with $3.30. Iuka has it for $3.35 and Starkville has it for $3.37.

And we have a four-way tie for most expensive. Sherman, Oxford, Tupelo (Kroger) and Sam’s Club (member price) have regular priced at $3.39. Pretty amazing considering that Sherman normally is one of the contenders for our cheapest gas and Oxford normally has the highest.
